Sanctuary
These Landscapes are lone quiet spaces, devoid of human life chosen for their ethereal energy and emotive content. Pictures of barren trees have been a part of my imagery since I began to put pen to paper as a child. Now, rather than create them from my imagination, I find these scenes in nature and photograph them as obsessively as I once drew them.
I use Polaroid Positive/Negative Black & White film, (which has been discontinued since 2008) and a large format camera to create these images. Because this film has almost no grain and a very long tonal range, there is a unique look to these photographs. The negatives are processed right on the spot, which means each photo session usually involves a lengthy stop and a lot of patience. The film is very sensitive and will react to changes in temperature and humidity, this can be frustrating at times, but will allow for happy accidents.
